“STAR/PLUMMET” – Song Reviews

starry winter night in the forest

“STAR/PLUMMET”, the newest set of singles from the band Quarters, honestly took me a bit by surprise. This release is the first since the departure of guitarist Ben Acker from the band. On first listen, I noticed that these songs have a darker sound than much of Quarter’s past releases. I found Quarters band back in 2022 with their single “T Love”, and I was in LOVE with the funk-inspired and unbelievably catchy tune. Since then, their sound has evolved to something truly spectacular.

“STAR” has this absolutely intoxicating heavier bass sound that immediately draws you in. The guitars, vocals, and synth layer in with this angsty, slightly spacey feel that reminds me exactly of the song’s title. Immediately reminded me of the sky on this sunrise hike I did about two weeks ago, as pictured to the left. Man I love hiking. Anyhoo, my favorite part of this song is that second pre-chorus at 1:21. The heavy toms adds so much intensity and complements the lyrics during that section so well.

“PLUMMET” feels almost like an extension of “STAR”, but diving even further into this grungy, energetic, and just overall dope resonance that I have listened to far more than I’d like to admit. That riff at the beginning (and honestly the whole song) is reminiscent of a lot of 90s rock/metal to me; It instantly made me think of “Forty Six & 2” by TOOL and a lot of Nirvana’s discography. The band pulls this wall of sound in and out throughout the song, cutting to just bass and drums in between, and the contrast of that is genuinely one of my favorite aspects of the song.

10/10, no notes, Quarters I love you, and I can’t wait to hear what’s next for this band! Hopefully I can snag tickets to their SLC show in March. 🙂
